Hello Méli-Méloers!
May I recommend
Lotion-infused tissues.
I was recently visited by the Covid fairy and it was unpleasant and irritating as such things are.
However, being “properly” sick for a few days with a readily understood illness is also a little bit wonderful.
Firstly there is the excuse (NOT THAT WE NEED AN EXCUSE!) to rest. All plans must be cancelled, the couch must become our home, our feet should never be called upon to support us. Maybe we’ll use the dinner bell to summon assistance when we need more water, tea, soup, laptop chargers because it is imperative that we loll around. We must save our strength!
Second there is the excuse (NOT THAT WE NEED AN EXCUSE) to do some good quality moaning and to tell uninterested people in obsessive detail about exactly how our throat feels (not scratchy exactly, but more raspy…) the degree of achiness in our bones and the precise content of our noses.
Still, despite these pleasures, it can’t be denied that being sick also really does suck. While there is an undeniable delight in blowing off the gym and calling in sick, you also physically feel like garbage. Over the years I have evolved from a Spartan-like resistance to doing anything I perceived as “weak” and “coddling” to fully embracing every cozy, comforting things I can get my hands on.
This I think, is the wisdom that comes with age. You’re not winning any points by spending sweat-drenched feverish nights tossing and turning — take the night time cold medicine! Shivering on the couch is for dummies — slide a heating pad in there!
And perhaps most importantly, when you’re blowing that nose constantly, spend the extra $2 and buy a box of lotion-infused tissues. They really are softer! They really do help! When your feeling utterly gross, there is no shame in doing the small things that can make you feel marginally less putrid.
Also, using those Kleenex feels fancy and when you have been shuffling around the house in the same threadbare, drool-stained, pajamas for three days, a little boost of fancy is just what you need.
Do it! Buy the posh tissues! Just make sure the non-sick of your household keep their hands off them. Those little squares of thin white cotton are for your sickly, dripping, frankly revolting shnoz and yours alone!
Do you use these Kleenex? Have any other hot tips about managing illness?
